Emerging Chilean Female Writers: Working Conditions and Gender Relations in the Current Literary Field

Through interviews with twelve contemporary female writers, this paper characterizes the working conditions and gender relations in the current literary field in Chile. The analysis of the interviews allows to delve into the documented trend of precariousness and moonlighting in the literary work, adding that this is done mostly in the university teaching area and literary workshops, in the case of female writers. Also, the time management emerges as an important element, which determines the forms of work in literature. Regarding gender relations, the interviewees observe differences in remuneration in favor of men, and a historical masculinization of the literary canon. To this is added an inequality in the awarding of prizes and funds, given mostly to men.
