According to Gentile's aesthetical thought, at the base of a great work of art there is always the sentiment, that assures the immortality of art through the centuries. Furthermore, art lives and dies at the same time. So we can say that in opposition to Benedetto Croce's interpretation the death of art is not empirical, but ideal, and that art lives by integrating itself with others moments of the spiritual life. Gentile's Aesthetics is therefore a holistic conception, in which all elements are essential to the existence of the whole.
