摘要
The various drivers for change in the renewables energy sector are being enhanced by legislation and concordats at national, EU and world level. The UK presents a good example of an approach to improvement through the definition of an open and flexible system for achievement, which allows all players in the sector to play a full part. UK plans are reported as examples of the heat and power sector plus indicating the potential for sustainable liquid propellant fuels. In addition the wider issues of sustainability; land use and externalities are listed. Currently there is considerable interest in biodiesel, a product from vegetable oils that is well known, and bioethanol. This latter offers considerable potential to add value to the rural economy and utilise cellulosic wastes. Technology is developing and should be operational in about 5 years time. It may also offer the option to utilise cellulosic components from municipal wastes, presuming separation to be practicable.
