The solenoid is a kind of widely used electromagnetic component, and it is hoped to be more economical in the application. In this paper, we present a method for the optimal design of magnets with respect to specific inductance values which can occur when we design direct current (DC) reactors in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system. The method is derived from the traditional electromagnetic theorem, and the optimization algorithm is employed from the constrained optimization. The minimum volume of the solenoid at a given inductance can be obtained by alpha and beta parameters. The optimization method is used for the design of a prototype solenoid.
