Antarctic long-duration balloon flights: JACEE experience

JACEE has had four successful. long-duration balloon flights (LDBF) in Antarctica, in five attempts. The latest flight, in December, 1995, provided 348 hours of exposure at approximately 5 g/cm(2) residual overburden, for an array of 6 emulsion chamber modules with overall area 100 x 120 cm(2). Antarctic LDBF techniques have reached a degree of maturity which permits great advances in the rate of data acquisition. We will describe the gondola, data-logging onboard electronics, preparation and flight procedures, and special aspects of flight operations in the Antarctic. (C) 1998 COSPAR.
