Enhancement of 800 nm upconversion emission in a thulium doped tellurite microstructured fiber pumped by a 1560 nm femtosecond fiber laser

We report enhanced upconversion (UC) fluorescence in Tm3+ doped tellurite microstructured fibers (TDTMFs) fabricated by using a rod-in-tube method. Under the pumping of a 1560 nm femtosecond fiber laser, ultrabroadband supercontinuum light expanding from similar to 1050 to similar to 2700 nm was generated in a 4 cm long TDTMF. Simultaneously, intense 800 nm UC emission from the H-3(4) -> H-3(6) transition of Tm3+ was observed in the same TDTMF. Compared to that pumped by a 1560 nm continuous wave fiber laser, the UC emission intensity was enhanced by similar to 4.1 times. The enhancement was due to the spectral broadening in the TDTMF under the pumping of the 1560 nm femtosecond fiber laser. Published by AIP Publishing.
