摘要
The mission of Durban University of Technology (DUT) is to create lifelong learners in South Africa as well as to ensure preparedness for the world of work. The mission of DUT Library is a student centred service that enables teaching, learning and research, and encourages lifelong learning by: acquiring information resources; providing information skills training; ensuring equitable access to information and facilities; using appropriate technology and skilled staff, and engaging in resource sharing and community outreach. The paper presents an Information Literacy (IL) strategy for promoting lifelong learning. A powerful collaborative IL model between subject librarians and academics, underpinned by an institutional commitment for valuing the research process is outlined. An IL model for academic integration is presented across all six faculties in the university. The paper proposes IL as a main-streamed module in academic integration for undergraduates and postgraduates. This paper provides insight about: DUT Library's role in IL instruction; the university curriculum renewal project aimed at creating lifelong learners; the role of subject librarians leading instructional change; the role and experience of faculty members as they design assignments and modify courses to include IL; web based learning as a student centred learning tool, and the adoption of blended learning styles. The paper advocates for a changed purpose of academic libraries as integrated partners in fulfilling the mission of teaching, learning and research in universities. It is of value in highlighting academic integration of libraries in promoting lifelong learning in South Africa.
