Observations and modelling of the response of along-track SAR interferometry to mesoscale ocean features

Forward modelling of along-track interferometric (ATI) signatures of ocean areas is discussed, using surface wave spectra from a third-generation wave model (WAM), coupled to a model of the current field. Results are presented for two sites where ATI data were obtained from the NASA-JPL airborne synthetic-aperture radar (AIRSAR). Our forward modelling reproduces some of the observed ATI signatures associated with the current fields. However, discrepancies occur for both sites: off Hawaii, where orographic effects are not included in our modelling, and in the Kuroshio off SW Japan, where our modelling appears to miss structure on scales smaller than about 50 km. The model accuracy is also limited by the present understanding of the effect of hydrodynamic processes (wave-wave interactions) on the observed ATI signatures. Implications for future ATI observations from space are outlined.
