From ICD-9 to ICD-10 -: re-coding with DIMDI?

Since 01.01.2000 re-coding of ICD-9-coded data is required because ICD-10 has been ordered by law (SGB V) for diagnostic classification in inpatient and outpatient care. In this study, the German DIMDI's table for transition is compared with the WHO-Crosswalks. Differences found are critically commented with regard for a psychiatric hospital's statistics of diagnosis. Divergence especially relates to the ICD-9-numbers 295.6, 301.5, 301.9, 309.2, and 310.1, but also to the ICD-10 categories F06, F32, and F62. Summarizing the results, using DIMDI's table for transition allows in 95% of cases a correct re-coding of ICD-9 into ICD-10 categories and vice versa.
