Malaysian public library development through the year 2000

This article discusses public library development in Malaysia from the preindependence period to the year 2000. Public library development in Malaysia can be divided into three stages during this period: before 1968, 1969-89, and 1990-2000. During the three stages of public library development, many changes have taken place, especially with respect to organisational structure, roles, functions and provision of service. Overwhelming support from the Federal government and its agencies has been the major factor that has facilitated Malaysian public library development. Through legislation, financial assistance and national policies affecting public library services, the Federal government has been able to chart the course of public library development in Malaysia into the 21st century.
