摘要
High-cycle axial fatigue and fatigue crack growth (FCG) tests were performed in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution on two precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steels, 17-4 PH and Custom 450, heat treated to three different conditions. Results showed in both alloys the smooth specimens in peak-aged temper exhibited longer fatigue lives than the overaged ones while those in solution annealed condition stood in between. However, the overaged temper in each alloy exhibited superior FCG resistance to the other two tempers as a result of its greater toughness and lower susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement. Crack initiation stage appears to play the major role in determining the corrosion fatigue life of smooth surface. In overall comparison among these two alloys in various tempers, the greatest corrosion fatigue resistance of smooth specimen is possessed by the material with the highest yield strength.
