摘要
Most major aerospace companies now have programmes involving advanced demonstration of optical fibre sensors. This is testimony of the perceived reduction in risk associated with the technology. It also follows from the growing awareness both of the limitations of; conventional electrical sensors and the unique attributes of optical solutions. The shift of attitude in favour of optical sensing is due in no small part to the appearance of the fibre Bragg grating. As a robust and generically simple sensor concept, it holds great attraction for those who operate in the harsh aerospace environment. Airborne Bragg grating, structural strain sensor systems have been demonstrated as well as 'smart structure' concepts which encompass amalgamation of optical fibre with the reinforcing fibres in composite materials. This presentation examines some examples of aerospace demonstration of structural monitoring sensors from one 'end-user' company perspective. Some of the key hurdles yet to be surmounted are also identified.
