Cultural Connotations of Metaphor and Simile in English and Chinese

As important figures of speech, metaphor and simile are deeply ingrained with traces of a particular society, reflecting unique cultural connotations. In different cultures, different languages conceptualize and create symbols in varying ways, and therefore the sense of metaphor and simile is frequently culture-specific. Due to similarities and dissimilarities between the two cultures, this paper mainly focuses on cultural overlap and cultural conflict. The writer will also discuss four factors which lead to cultural conflict.
