Copper and aluminium materials have wide-ranging applications in various industries because of their excellent thermal, electrical and corrosion-resistant properties. To make utmost use of the peculiar properties of both these metals, it is essential to produce good sound welds. Friction stir welding has shown great potential in joining dissimilar metals. The present article presents a broad insight on joining of copper and aluminium using Friction stir welding. Friction Stir Welding process parameters such as tool rotational speed, traverse speed and weld defects are discussed. New developments such as using external cooling medium, combining Friction Stir Welding with cold rolling process and addition of intermediate filler materials, to improve joint properties are also discussed in the present review paper.
