The role of faults in studying the Sea of Japan lithosphere with the use of the Nakhodka-Naoetsu submarine cable

摘要
The paper analyzes the possible effect of conducting deep fault zones on the results of sounding in the Sea of Japan with the use of the Nakhodka-Naoetsu submarine cable. The analysis showed that the integral resistivity of the lithosphere can be significantly underestimated if faults as wide as 20 km reach the asthenosphere, and the resistivity of their rocks is on the order of 10 Omega m or less. If future, more realistic estimates show that the faults are a few kilometers wide and their penetration depth is considerably greater than the crustal thickness in the Sea of Japan, the fault effect on the integral resistivity estimates can evidently be neglected.
