A set of problems, fast solvers and Sylvester equation, that have an additional type of structure, in matrix algebra was discussed. One strategy for solving it is to discretize the equation by choosing mesh points. An equation was provided for each mesh point by approximating the derivatives by finite differences. The Sylvester equation formulation gives a compact representation of the problem in terms of the data matrix and two tridiagonal matrices of dimension.
