Effect of defect percentage and scanning strategy on visual search performance

In this experiment, the effects of defect percentage and scanning strategy on five different performance measures viz. correct acceptance percentage (CAP), correct inspection percentage (CIP), hit rate (HTR), inspection rate (IPR), and efficiency in improving the product (EIP) were investigated with simulated industrial inspection tasks. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the results showed that within the range of values tested, both defect percentage and scanning strategy were riot significantly related to the search performance measures of the subjects. Moreover, the collected eye movement data showed that fixation duration was subject dependent and not significantly affected by the two factors tested. Scanning paths were found to exhibit some patterns even though subjects were instructed to adopt a random search strategy.
