Background: In recent years, the marriage rate in China has been declining year by year, and the phenomenon of divorce is particularly prominent. The reason lies in the fact that the increasing consciousness of marriage autonomy plays an irreplaceable role in promoting the current development of marriage. Subjects and methods: Based on the provincial panel data of 31 provinces (municipalities and autonomous regions) in China from 2012 to 2019, this paper uses data from the Baidu search index and court case information to measure the occurrence of domestic violence in various regions and the different degree of people's attention to domestic violence, and empirically analyzes the impact of domestic violence on marriage choice by using dynamic panel model and generalized method of moments GMM. Results: For every 100 increases in the Baidu search index, the rough marriage rate drops by 1 parts per thousand. For every 100 increases in the number of domestic violence-related cases, the marriage rate drops by 0.8 parts per thousand. Conclusions: The results show that the occurrence of domestic violence has a significant negative effect on the rough marriage rate, and the conclusion is verified by the relevant robustness test.
