Forage maize: elaboration of yield and quality, harvest and conservation Forage maize is a key component of many forage systems in France, mainly in dairy production. Its consistent nutritional qualities, high energy value, and the fact it is easy to grow and conserve account for this success. The development in the use of maize silage in France is documented, the total area planted to forage maize is 1.4 million ha. The plant growth cycle is described further in the text, as well as the influence of cropping choices (differences in earliness between varieties, sowing and harvest dates) and plant growth conditions on yield, chemical composition and energy value. Choosing the right harvest date is crucial for maintaining the quantity and quality of forage after it is harvested, forage maize should be harvested when DM content reaches 30 to 35%. Forage maize is mainly a source of energy for daily cows and must therefore be supplemented with Crude Protein and minerals in order to provide animals with a healthy and well balanced feed ration.
