Endoscopic variceal ligation versus endoscopic sclerotherapy: comparison of complications and rebleeding

Endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) with 6-shooter or sclerotherapy (EVS) is undoubtedly beneficial for bleeding esophageal varices. But complications and rebleedings are common during the treatment period. We are considered that EVL is safer and more effective after comparing EVL with EVS. It was compared in a randomised trial of 104 patients (56assigned to ligation and 48 to sclerotherapy). The complications of sclerotherapy are significantly higher and more serious than ligation. The mortality of sclerotherapy is higher at the 12th and 18th month than ligation. EVL with 6-shooter is safe, easy, effective and reduction of rebleeding. EVL should be considered as the first choice therapy.
