This paper is a theoretical reflection on the concept of "immersion", by means of comparison of patterns emerging from qualitative data analysis and concepts from previous theories. The data were collected in Berlin, Karlsruhe and Melbourne and are represented by notes from participant observation and interviews. The methodology used is a combination of four methods: grounded theory, narrative inquiry, case study and digital ethnography. The case study is the immersive environment PLACE-Hampi, designed by Jeffrey Shaw and Sarah Kenderdine.
