DISARMAMENT, PUBLIC HEALTH AND SECURITY IN THE 21ST CENTURY

This analysis discusses the way in which armed conflicts and violence impact public health, to subsequently reflect on the importance of disarmament for public health and the relevance of a human security approach, which beyond the traditional visions of "hard security" converge in the assessment of the relationship between security and development. The method used to approach the subject is deductive from the reconceptualization of security in the post-cold war on. The article concludes that disarmament, especially of small and light weapons and firearms, is of great importance for developing countries but that this issue does not attract international attention given that the most advanced countries prioritize the disarmament of major conventional weapons and weapons of mass destruction. It also points out the importance of bringing health professionals closer to disarmament.
