The US Congress has drafted the Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 2010, which is expected to include a brake override, a mandate that prevents pedals from getting trapped in floor mats or other obstructions, and electronic system's performance standards. The new regulations forces automobile companies to introduce new technologies complying with the rules. General Motors Co. (GM) R&D engineers are working on an enhanced vision system, building off current headup display (HUD) technology that could greatly improve safety, especially in the area of distracted or inattentive driving. GM is working with Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Southern California, and other institutions to create the full-windshield head-up system that facilitates night vision, navigation, and camera-based sensors for improved driver visibility and object detection. Albonair GmbH, Dortmund, has introduced its selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system that features compactness and design flexibility, allowing integration into existing vehicle space.
