The morbidity pattern of low birth weight infant in neonatal intermediate ward of Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya

Low birth weight and prematurity were found to be strong predictors of morbidity and mortality in neonatal period. This study was aimed to know the morbidity pattern of low birth weight infant in neonatal intermediate ward of Dr. Soetomo Hospital. Retrospective study was performed to subject newborn babies who admitted to neonatal intermediate ward in January 1st, 2002 to December 31st, 2003. Data was compiled from medical record. During two years period, there were 882 (30,09%) Low Birth Weight (LBW) infants admitted to intermediate ward. The most common morbidity in LBW infants was hyperbilirubinemia (24.15%) and asphyxia (18.82%) and followed by septicemia (17.01%) and congenital anomaly (3.74%). 65 (7.37%) LBW infants were died (17 LBW infant died < 48 hours). The main cause of death in LBW infants was septicemia.
