Effect of welding on the nitriding response of AISI 304 stainless steel

摘要
The structure, thickness and hardness of the layers formed in the base metal and the weld zone after plasma nitriding TIG-welded austenitic stainless steel have been investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, glow-discharge spectrometry and microhardness testing. The results show that the welded structure responds well to plasma nitriding, provided that the welded surface has been cleaned by grinding before nitriding. Otherwise, the surface oxide film formed in the welding process impedes nitrogen mass transfer.
