Ya can't calibrate a thermocouple junction .1. Why not?

Principles of realistic thermocouples and more complex thermoelectric circuits are persistently misrepresented. The Seebeck emf is wrongly localized to junctions. Misunderstanding can lead to costly error. This article will describe these common illusions. Part I reviews a practical functional model of thermoelectric circuits that is well adapted to the authentic understanding of general thermoelectric circuits. It provides a sound basis for the practice and quality assurance of thermoelectric thermometry. In the October issue of M&C, Part II will address the consequences of the model in the proper understanding and analysis of stability an inhomogeneity, and in avoiding pitfalls of calibration.
