Low and inconsistent elemental recovery problems are often encountered when adding certain specific alloys to the baths of cast iron. This is the case if the alloyed element presents some of the following characteristics: Low melting or boiling points Lower density than the molten iron Low solubility in the liquid iron High affinity due to oxygen and sulphur High vapour pressure. These circumstances lead to difficulties or risks, such as: Poor or erratic recovery of alloying elements Forming of non-metallic inclusions Violent and dangerous reaction Adverse environmental impact.
