摘要
Mourning clothes were an essential part of the etiquette rules in the second half of the 19th century. They were spread by magazines such as A Estacao: Jornal Illustrado para a Familia, which circulated in Rio de Janeiro between 1879-1904. On its pages, it was possible to find instructions on how to dress during mourning - models, fabrics, ornaments and accessories in general - and how to use all these elements on each fase of mourning. Through a very significant corpus of texts from the magazine, this articles aims to elaborate an overview of these recommendations, raising important questions such as the predominance of women's mourning attire and its changes on the passage to the 20th century.
