Research and development on cotton during and after the Indian-supported Agricultural Development Project in Senegal

An analysis was carried out of the contributions of research and development on cotton to increases in production and productivity during and after the Government of India's Agricultural Development Project (ADP) in Senegal It is suggested that cotton research programmes need to focus on the breeding of region-specific varieties with resistance to bollworms and exploiting the available world genetic stocks to achieve the desirable characteristics The primary need is for the introduction of Indian varieties of Gossypium arboreum and G herbaceum, an emphasis on the implementation of integrated pest management (IPM) technology and a strengthening of seed production programmes The possible roles of Bt and organic cottons are also discussed
