摘要
Integrating a high share of variable renewable energy into multi-region power systems is essential and requires an interconnected transmission grid to coordinate regional power system operations. This paper proposes a multi-region power system optimization model to evaluate the role of interconnection in China's power sector for economic benefit, variable renewable energy power generation and allocation, transmission line efficiency and carbon emission transfer in the context of renewable energy consumption policy. The results show that inter-regional power transmission coupled with flexibility technology can facilitate renewable power generation and delivery. The renewable energy consumption policy would intensify this effect, although it leads to a slight drop in economic efficiency. Improving the compatibility of transmission network with variable power is crucial because wind and solar power are expected to make up 60% of the total inter-regional power transmission, particularly the share in the outward transmission lines from the northwest region reaching 91%. Renewable energy integration policy targets in northwest, north, Inner-Mongolia and northeast regions can be improved to 37.5%, 31.5%, 35.3%, and 36.9%, respectively.
