摘要
At the beginning of the twentieth century a social debate arose in Spain concerning which name, castellano or espanol was more appropriate for the national language, and this debate saw the Real Academia side with espanol in the twenties. Menendez Pidal was one of the first defenders of the properties of espanol which he had already justified in the Manual de la gramatica historica' in 1904 and in an informative article, 'La lengua espanola; in 1918. The analysis of the origins of this controversy, in a modern meaning, unveils through these texts the dual dimension of the name change; as a theoretical innovation of historical significance within linguistics and as a social action of a discursive nature.
