Over the last 20 years, diagnostic imaging of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) has revealed that disk displacement is the most frequent abnormality in patients with TMJ pain and dysfunction. Because MR imaging accurately and noninvasively depicts both hard and soft tissues, this technique has been used to detect a number of abnormalities, including disk alterations in the TMJ. This article discusses MR findings of pathologic entities that specifically occur in the TMJ.
