Preliminary results of thermal and electrical conductivity measurement at cryogenic temperatures of riveted junctions for the thermal shield of the ATLAS Barrel Toroid.

The sections of the thermal shield of the ATLAS Barrel Toroid consist of 4 Al alloy panels joined by Al alloy rivets. The thermal conductivity of these junctions has a strong influence on the efficiency of the thermal shield. Also their electrical resistivity must be taken into account in the design because the magnetic forces due to eddy currents depend on this value. Because of these reasons an apparatus was built in order to measure the thermal and electrical conductivity of these junctions. Measurements are in course using liquid Nitrogen and liquid Helium as heat sink. The description of the apparatus, its calibration and the first results on a sample of 5754 alloy at LN temperature are reported.
