Extraction and spectrophotometric determination of palladium(II) with 1-phenyl-1,2-butanedione dioxime

Extraction and spectrophotometric determination of palladium(II) has been carried out using a new reagent 1-phenyl-1,2-butanedione dioxime (H2PBDD) which forms a yellow coloured complex with Pd(II). The complex can be quantitatively extracted into toluene in the pH range 6.5-9.0. The complex system conforms to Beer's law over the range 0.5-9.0 mu g ml(-1) of palladium(II). The molar absorptivity of the extracted species is 3.74 x 10(3) l mol(-1) cm(-1) at 380 nm. The ratio of metal ion to ligand in the coloured complex has been found to be 1:2. Interference due to diverse cations and anions has been investigated. The method is simple, selective, rapid and accurate and has been employed for the determination of palladium(II) in synthetic and real samples.
