Large cities and small cities demand different kinds of planning. This paper, which analyses the demographic and employment structures of four important Asian mega-cities-Bangkok, Taipei, Jakarta and Manila-emphasises the concept of zonal planning, making clear distinctions between the characteristics of the official metropolitan area and two concentric zones surrounding it, the inner and the outer.
