What creative ways can be used to increase efficiency and reduce solid waste costs with low/no capital expenditure? This paper discusses some of the initiatives undertaken at Australian Paper's Maryvale Mill waste paper plant during 2012-2014. The waste paper plant is an old container clippings pulping plant built in 1996 to provide waste furnish to Maryvale's M4 paper machine for waste containing liner board manufacture and M2 paper machine for light packaging grades. At M4 paper machine the waste paper plant provides a lower cost pulp suitable for kraft liner board grades that do not require 'high performance' properties associated with an all virgin product. This paper covers operational improvements, diversion of waste streams and investigations into key plant areas.
