摘要
Buried in an inventory of New York City's greenhouse gas emissions was a single number: 54 million metric tons of CO2 (equivalent) per year. Accounting for CO2 in units of mass is fine but not very intuitive. Carbon Visuals (the precursor to Real World Visuals) was exploring ways to make numbers physically meaningful. What does a ton of gas actually look like? They placed the emissions in a context that the primary audience could relate to on a very personal level. The impact was astonishing. The film and stills appeared in media around the world. The film New York's carbon emissions (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU6n9pjA-lg) illustrates New York City's daily average greenhouse gas emissions (actual volume of CO2 gas), equivalent to 148,000 tons of CO2 to the atmosphere, in 2010. The still image presented here, a screen shot from the film, represents a day's emissions as a pile of 1 ton spheres in mid-Manhattan.
