摘要
Over 75% of global sugar supply is derived from sugarcane. Sugarcane production in Africa is expanding. Over the period 2001/02 to 2010/11, cane sugar production increased from 8.8113 million tonnes to 9.517 million tonnes. With sugarcane no longer just a food crop, but a useful feedstock in the emerging bioeconomy for the production of biofuels, biobased products and biochemicals its importance as a source of opportunities for producers is widely acknowledged. The future role For Africa in the sugarcane industry will be driven in great part by its producers' ability to continue to increase yields and mechanise sugarcane harvesting.
