摘要：

This paper develops the concept and structure of an expert system for yam engineering. It describes the process of yam engineering, in addition to the structure, components and functional features of a yam engineering expert system. To reduce the complexity of the expert system it needs to be broken down into a number of sub-expert systems that enable the determination of fibre specifications, yam type, yam specification, twist, draft sizing and yam performance under various spinning systems. These sub-expert systems interact and exchange information to produce a seemingly whole functionality.
