The Types, Distribution and Evolution of Apical Vowels in Chinese Dialects

摘要：
This paper analyzes the types of apical vowels in Chinese dialects based on Map 118 apical vowel of the Phonetics Volume of the Linguistic Atlas of Chinese Dialects. Addressing the question of presence of apical vowels in the relevant areas, this study investigates the regional and dialectal distribution of each small category and summarizes the main types in each dialect. This paper also discusses the formation and evolution of the apical vowels. The finding shows that the emergence of apical vowels is a later development and their distribution reflects the different evolution processes and directions of these dialects.
