摘要
The hypothesis of Campbell appears to be untenable. It presupposes that the peace treaty between Vitellius and Artaban was concluded some months before the death of Tiberius. This is contradicted not only by the assertions of Suetonius and Dio Cassius, but also by the chronology of the events given by Tacitus. There remains a last possibility, which, strangely, has not been presented up to now. Aretas had taken Damascus, as a preventive measure, when he heard that the legate of Syria, Vitellius, was preparing an expedition against him. After a short presentation of the hazardous theory of Ch. Saulnier, the second part of this study examines in details the ins and outs of this hypothesis, as also its implications for the Pauline chronology.
