Optimizing the reuse of light metals from end-of-life vehicles: Lessons from closed loop simulations

A linear optimization model was developed and employed to study the recycling of automotive aluminum, with particular attention paid to devising strategies that could be utilized to minimize the cost of recovering and reusing aluminum scrap from automobiles. Building upon the work of Gorban et al. (1994), the use of linear optimization sensitivity parameters (shadow prices) was explored to gain insight into issues around: alloy choice in car design, compositional modifications of alloys and value of upgrading post-consumer scrap. This paper examines some strategies for increasing recycling of light metals from vehicles. Results show that through strategic alloys choice, material reuse rates and costs can be improved.
