Endometrial ablation with the Cavaterm thermal balloon

To determine the effects of endometrial ablation using Cavaterm thermal balloon, a prospective observational study took place on 34 patients suffering with menorrhagia. All had the procedure performed under general anaesthetic and all required sedation. All patients in the study were followed up at three, six and nine months. At present the results are encouraging showing at six months ten (31%) with amenorrhoea and three (9%) spotting, with light periods eight (25%), with normal cycles four (13%). Three remained heavy (9%). At nine months the amenorrhoea rate and spotting was noticed in four (40%) followed up at present with four (40%) periods becoming lighter. Patients will be followed up to two years to evaluate the long term benefit.
