Modern and eternal: of the discourses of modernity in Belo Horizonte

A centenary city, Belo Horizonte stands out since its inauguration as a thoroughly designed urban project with its eyes on modernity. With this article, we posit a revisal of the phenomenon of modernity using as empirical basis the art event BHOOM: 120 years vertical bar What is modern and eternal in BH? with the aim of tracing the main discursive strengths that support the modernist-eternal ideal in Belo Horizonte. By addressing the modern as a tradition of breaking up with the past to create the new, we understand Belo Horizonte, since the 1940's till our current days, as a sound example to help scrutinizing the modernity phenomenon and its current resonance.
