An experiment for undergraduate biochemistry laboratory classes demonstrating the competitive inhibition of yeast alcohol dehydrogenase by 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol is described. The experiment uses a convenient, rapid spectrophotometric assay and can be accomplished in one laboratory period. Students can measure the Michaelis-Menten constant for ethanol and determine the inhibition constant for 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol. (C) 1998 IUBMB. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
