The 1898 Spanish-American War as viewed by the Mexican press

This work analyzes the attitude of the Mexican press regarding the war of 1898 between Spain and the United States, and concludes that the positions adopted by the different groups of opinion were clearly influenced by the ideas that each of these groups-which were basically Liberals and Conservatives-already had about Mexico's history and, consequently, about the character of the Mexican nation. Thus, Mexican newspaper articles on the war in Cuba became an important means for understanding both the process of building the Mexican nation, and the contradictions that such a process implies.
