摘要
This paper sets out to reflect upon an aspect of the evolution in online learning with reference to one of the first wholly online undergraduate work based degrees. Since the launch of the Ultraversity degree ten years ago, the advancements in technology both in terms of device development and the speed in which data can be transmitted between computers and smart devices has changed significantly. An evolution has occurred whereby fixed, desk-bound computers dependent upon a constant source of electricity and a telephone landline for Internet connectivity spawned laptops complete with their own power source. Laptops in turn were then able to harness wireless technology in order to connect to the Internet. The advent of smart devices supported by the mobile Internet have revolutionised our use of the Internet and access to online resources. This in turn is liberating formal learning from the traditional confines of the classroom and lecture theatre. Research conducted a decade ago investigating mobile online learning highlighted the importance of technology devices that were easy and convenient to use, and that could readily access the Internet. Currently smart devices are helping to address those requirements. This paper argues that technology alone cannot sustain the increasing opportunities for anytime anywhere learning. The role of the learning facilitator is key in this process.
