In this paper the intervertebral disc in the lumbar segment (L2-3) of the spine was modelled and analysed using the finite element software, ABAQUS(R). Two modes of loading conditions, axial compression and axial torsion, were used. The graph of axial compressive load against axial displacement and the graph of applied axial torque against angular displacement were compared against similar plots by other researchers and were found to be consistent with published results. Analysis was carried out using this model to determine the significance of the presence of the annulus fibrosus and the nucleus pulposus in the intervertebral disc. Results revealed that the nucleus pulposus and the annulus fibrosus play important roles in load bearing, under axial compression and axial torsion. The computational modelling serves as a useful tool in the preliminary design of an intervertebral disc prosthesis (IVDP).
