摘要：
The notion of a self-sustaining economy is one which we have taken for granted for generations, but it is a notion which is losing currency in the face of many modern challenges. The present article attempts to identify some of those challenges, and by so doing, illustrate that sustainable development is not simply an outgrowth of environmentalism. Rather it is an opportunity to re-appraise our processes and products to minimise their lifecycle cost, and create new markets in rapidly industrialising markets such as China and India.
