Amebic liver abscess (ALA) is being encountered more frequently in the United States following an increased influx of immigrants from, and increased travel to, areas where the disease is endemic as well as an increase in the homosexual population. We present the case of a 30-year-old physician who contracted amebiasis in his native India. Oral metronidazole is the treatment of choice for uncomplicated ALA, but needle aspiration under ultrasonographic or CT guidance or percutaneous catheter drainage and surgery may be required in certain cases.
